Hook & Reel Angling Club

                                                                   Swartkops, South Africa

A Very BIG Thank you to all our sponsors for making possible another successful Tiger Bay 1000  fished on the 8th of May 2010.

Main sponsor:  Adrenalin Fishing, suppliers of great fishing tackle and Omoto Reels!!!

Other stalwarts were: Control Instruments, EP Filters, Bruce Dantu, Poulter Industries, Metro Engineering, Major Tech, AV Designers, Distillers, Sharwoods, Summerstrand Village, Prestons Liquors Mount Pleasant, Spar, Freshstop Linton Grange, EG Plastics, Imperial Bank, Midas Linton Grange, Steyns Drilling and Breamer Paints.

We appeal to all our anglers to support these sponsors wholeheartedly!

The Junior winner was master Nell from H&R and the Lady winner Ms Abdulla also from H&R, while the Senior winner was a private angler.

Development day was also held on 17 July 2010.  Everyone turned up with takkies and refuse bags and proceeded to clean up the eastern bank of the river.  Although the cold, blustering wind was enough to dampen anyone's spirits, the turnout was fairly good and we hope to make this an annual event. In all, 8 bags of rubbish were collected on this one bank only, so much remains to be done in order to conserve our little part of paradise for the generations to come. To all those skippers who made their vessels available a "BIG THANKS".

We receive frequent enquiries about the when and how of Skipper's Courses. Boat owners should be in possession of both a Certificate of Competence (COC) and a Certificate of Fitness (COF) in respect of their boats. The persons who should always have up to date information on these matters in the Port Elizabeth area are:

COC - Skippers License - Johan Gouws - 082 724 754

COF - Boat Worthiness - Stephan Strydom - 082 899 2559

Please phone these guys, should you have any enquiries in respect of the above.

Hi there fair weather anglers,

Yes, we have reached that time of the year again to beg and plead for committee members and time to bid some of long serving committee members good-bye.  Sjoe! Where has the year gone?  It is with regret and sadness that we say farewell to Ma Esme.  She has decided to call it quits at the end of the season.  Esme what can we say to you, to say Thanks just does not sound enough, you have been a pillar of strength on the committee and have always been that voice of reason, you have always been willing to assist in all the functions, we are going to miss you!!  To Oom Louis thanks for lending her to us. To the rest of the committee, their spouses and family thanks for all the time spent at the club for committee meetings and club functions.

CLUB MAINTENANCE

Our regular members will notice that the jetties are in serious need of repairs.  The jetties where donated to the club and if they are left any longer without maintenance we will not have them much longer.  There will be a work party on the weekend of the 11th and 12th  September 2010 to remove the jetties and start with the necessary maintenance, anybody willing and able to assist please contact Stephan or Kobus for more information.

There is a wall being erected between us and the rod club.  We will be supplying the gate that we be put up between the clubs and paying part of the wall.

Our club house will also go under construction once all the building quotes have been received.

Issues once again raised by facilities manager at our committee meeting:

ACCESS TO THE CLUB:  Ensure that the gate and clubhouse is locked when leaving the clubhouse.  Uncle BJ has found the gate open the last few times he has come down to the clubhouse.

RUBBISH and the ABUSE OF FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT:  I am sure that we do not leave dirty bait boxes, nappies, braai packs lying around in our lounges, kitchens and back yard SO WHY DO OUR MEMBERS DO IT AT THE CLUBHOUSE? It cost nothing to pick the rubbish when you have finished using the facilities; there ARE NOT little fairies that do this at the club, PLEASE CLEAN UP after yourselves.

Likewise the toilets PLEASE people FLUSH after use, I sure that you do not leave your bathrooms in the state the club toilets are found at times.

It boggles my brain why people feel the need to steal.  Some of you will have noticed the stove in the kitchen only has 1 plate working, on inspection, it was discovered that somebody had helped themselves to the fuses in the stove.  If this abuse continues the kitchen will be locked and only be in use when the hall is hired out.

THANKS TO SPONSORS

Those who attended the SOP en DOP on Saturday night would have seen the awesome Hook and Reel sign that was donated by Redge Phelan.  Thanks Redge we only have had compliments and the 7 members of the Hook and Reel Angling Club, where the envy of many club at the EP Prize-giving as Stephan proudly displayed it above the table.

Thanks Mark for the Sop en Dop, it felt like the parties of old the club is use to having. Thanks to all those who attended.  Thanks Vinash Indajee for the generous donation of the Sedgwick old brown sherry mugs, hats and of course the Old brown sherry, which went down very well with some of our guests, I will not name them.  A great party was had by all. To the committee who really went out of their way to sell tickets, make the soup, work in the bar and clean up afterwards, thanks!

Our club captain, Kobus has mentioned that it is a concern for him as all facets are rather poorly attended by Hook and Reel Angling club.  The only way to grow the club once again to its former self is to work on getting anglers to fish the facets. It was rather noticeable at the EPLTBAA prize giving as only 2 junior anglers of Hook and Reel received awards.  Rivers at present have no ladies, bay has 1 and freshwater 1.  The junior anglers are also dwindling in numbers with only 3 juniors fishing at present; they do not even fish the same facet so we cannot even enter a team at the leagues.   The development of our club lies in the numbers of juniors that we can develop.  There is more than enough senior anglers and boats available to fish on and who are prepared to “assist and help” our junior or lady anglers.

CLUB CLOTHING:

I will be taking orders for clothing, prices are as follows:

Tracksuit:                              R320

Shorts:                                   R75

Waterproof Jacket               R200

Fishing shirt                         R100

Please contact me via email devry@telkomsa.net or cell 082 570 5325 if you want to place orders for clothing by the 29th of August 2010.

EMAIL ADDRESS:

I once again appeal to all our members who have email addresses to forward it to me.  In this way we can cut the cost of our postage and I can keep our members up to date with what is happening on the angling scene.

News from the EP angling table:  The secretary Tom has resigned and they desperately looking for a new secretary to help out till January 2011.  The EP Angling week was a huge success with approximately R15000 being made.  They once again thanked us for the use of our facilities and especially uncle BJ who got very little sleep.  They are also at present looking for a home for EPLTBAA as the Diaz Club will soon not be available for use.  The weighing of fish is also being investigated as it is against regulations to weigh fish as anglers are killing the fish.  Tielman Niewoudt has been appointed to investigate a measuring system for the facets.

Yours in Angling
